Household

A house is more than a building, a series of rooms or a collection of furnishings and decorations, the real life of the house is in its occupants. The lord and lady of the manor may take pride of place, and their story can be found elsewhere in the collections, but it is the people who keep things running who really make up the household.

The servants who make the beds and stoke the fires, the housekeeper who makes sure food is put on the table, the secretary, the stable boy and the estate manager are often the forgotten people of the household. Here we hope to tell something of their story.
