Ceiling bosses X 7, St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze, fifteenth century
Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
15th century carved oak wooden figures (known as bosses), adorn the chancel ceiling in St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze. The bosses, of which a selection are shown here, were cleaned in 2019 as part of major conservation works in the church. Analysis undertaken at the time demonstrated that they had not been previously painted.
The lady holding a young crowned child is believed to be Margaret Beaufort, daughter of Margaret Beauchamp and cousin to the St.John's of Lydiard Park. The young child is the future King Henry VII.
