A charming engraving showing the twin daughters of Lady Diana Beauclerk (ne Spencer) after a drawing by their mother Lady Diana Beauclerk (1734-1808). The girls, Elizabeth Beauclerk (1766-1793) later Elizabeth Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, and Mary Beauclerk (1766-1851), later Mary Jenison, Countess of Jenison-Walworth, are seen reclining on a day bed.
Prior to her marriage Mary, much to her mother's distress, had a long term relationship with her half -brother George Richard St.John, the eldest child of Diana's first marriage to Frederick St.John, 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke. Mary and George had four children together before he abandoned her.
The hand coloured stipple engraving was made by Francis Bartolozzi and published in May 1780. A copy (not coloured) hangs in the State Dressing Room at Lydiard House where works by and of Lady Diana are permanently displayed.
