An engraving of William Villiers, 2nd Viscount Grandison (1614-1643). William, like his Lydiard cousin Captain Edward St.John, died of wounds sustained while fighting for the King during the Civil War.
William was the son of Sir Edward Villiers (1585-1626) and Barbara St.John (c1592-1672), sister to Sir John St.John 1st Baronet. His portrait can be seen in the Dining Room at Lydiard Park.
William's daughter, Barbara Villiers, later Duchess of Cleveland, was the notorious mistress of Charles II.
The engraving was made by H. R. Cook after a portrait by Vandyke which is described as being in the collection of the Earl of Clarendon at the time of publishing in 1827.
The engraving is marked PROOF.
