Hatchment in chancel, St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze, sixteenth century
Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
Placed on the north wall of the chancel, this is a comparatively small hatchment which is rectangular in shape.
From the heraldry it relates to a St.John of Lydiard Tregoze, but one who is not a baronet; it lacks the 'Ulster hand'. This St.John was also unmarried at death as there is no coat for a wife.
The most likely St.John is Walter, eldest son of Sir John and Lucy Hungerford. He succeeded his father in 1594, but was to die still a teenager in 1597 in a drowning accident in the Channel Islands. He was under the care of the Governor of Guernsey, Sir Thomas Leighton, who after Walter's drowning, was given the wardship of his younger brother John. John subsequently was married to Sir Thomas's daughter, Anne Leighton, and went on to become the first baronet.
