Henrietta was the only surviving daughter of Henry 1st Viscount St. John and his second wife Angelica Pelissary. She spent her childhood summers at Lydiard Park.

Henrietta’s elder half-brother, Henry 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, had introduced her to banker Robert Knight, 1st Earl of Catherlough. Following a short engagement, the couple were married at St. George’s, Hanover Square on June 10, 1727. They had two children, Henry born in 1728 and Madelaine Henrietta born in 1729 but the marriage was not a happy one.
