Bolingbroke's Chateau of La Source by Kenneth Woodbridge
Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
The article is an account of the history of the chateau and gardens of La Source and their importance to the exiled Henry, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke. It describes the circumstances of Bolingbroke's marriage to his second wife, Marie-Claire Deschamps de Marcilly in 1720 and their coming to live at the chateau later that year.
'The few years he spent there were possibly amongst the happiest and most significant of his life. His relations with this second wife were to prove both stable and enduring. As the letter to Swift shows, he became absorbed in the pleasures of his garden; and he turned seriously to the study of history which was later to bear fruit in the pages of The Craftsman, and inspire the iconography in the landscape gardens of the opposition in the 1730's.'
The author conjectures on the mutual influence of Bolingbroke and his friend the poet, Alexander Pope.
