This letter dated 15th September 1917 was sent to Mrs Joseph Rudler of Coped Hall, Lydiard Tregoze, informing her that her son Alfred, a gunner with Royal Garrison Artillery, had arrived safely in Alexandria. It ends with the words " I hope he will return to you in good health at the end of the war". Thankfully he did.

Mrs Joseph Rudler and her husband were connected with the Prince of Wales public house at Coped Hall which fell within the Parish of Lydiard Tregoze at the time. Joseph's father Thomas Rudler (1841-1915) and grandfather Richard Rudler (1797-1875) and Richard's brother Henry Rudler (1805-1864) had all been landlords of the pub.
