Photographs (4) Lydiard Park Camp Coronation Celebrations, 1953
Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
Residents of the Lydiard Park estate ('the camp') celebrated Queen Elizabeth's coronation in June 1953 with a day of festivity. Precious rations were saved up in advance to provide a huge tea organised by Emmie Elliott. During the day a children's fancy dress competition was held and judged by the vicar of St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze. Lots of games were played including paperchase and a father's race with first prize being a bottle of beer. All the children were given special coronation mugs.
Sheila Locke lived with her parents at 'the camp' at Lydiard Park. Here she is wearing her home-made Hip Hip Hooray costume for the children's fancy dress competition.
The former military huts had been converted to homes for local people after World War II, including facilities for education and entertainment.
See Items of Interest for more pictures of Sheila and her family as well as information about Lydiard's 'Lost Estate'.
These images are taken from a collection of 49 copy negatives showing families on the Lydiard Park estate.
