The marriage of Henry 4th Viscount Bolingbroke and Maria St.John Mildmay took place in St. George's Hanover Square, the splendid parish church of Mayfair in London, in 1812.
Another member of the St.John family to marry at Hanover Square was Joseph Henry St.John (d1855) who wed Lady Isabella FitzRoy, a daughter of the 4th Duke of Grafton and God-Daughter of Horace Walpole, on 28th August 1829.
The church was built between 1721-1724 to the designs of John James, as one of the Fifty Churches projected by Queen Anne's Act of 1711, to meet the needs of the growing population. It was patronised by the aristocratic families living in the West End of London and became a venue for the most fashionable society weddings.
The reredos is from the workshop of Grinling Gibbons and frames a 'Last Supper' painted for the church by William Kent in 1724. The windows contain Flemish glass of the early 16th century from Antwerp.
George Frederick Handel was a regular worshipper at St. Georges' which is home to the annual London Handel Festival.
