Medieval glass at St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze: Angel and fiery furnace
Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
The upper central area of the window depicts an angel, below which three men stand in a fiery furnace, flames licking their feet.
The picture illustrates the biblical story (Daniel, Chap.3) of three Jewish youths, Shadrach, Meshack and Abednego, who were thrown into a furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar II for refusing to bow down before his image. The youths claimed they were protected by God. When the King saw that they were unharmed and that a fourth figure appeared with them, "like a son of God", he released them. He promoted the youths to high office and decreed that anyone who spoke against God would be torn limb from limb.
The window is attributed to John Thornton of Coventry, a leading stained glass artist whose major work was the great east window in Yok Minster.
