Medieval glass at St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze: Heraldry and foliage
Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
The 15th century (or possibly earlier) glass includes three heraldic shields and fragments of decorative foliage. Details on the shields are found in 'Old Glass for New' by the Rev. Brian Carne, Report no. 2 p30.
In the mid 19th century this window contained multi-coloured quarries with each light bordered by a continuous leaf design. One hundred years later the Victorian glass was considered garish and of little merit. In 1958 Mr Geoffrey Robinson was commissioned to create a new window using old glass from elsewhere in the church. Robinson recycled 18th century clear glass lights (previously obscured behind the monument to Sir John 2nd Vsct. St.John) to create much of the background for the new window. The shields and their surrounds were removed from the trefoil heads to the three lights behind the organ.
