Marjory Newman incorporates her own poetry in a vivid account of life in Lydiard Tregoze during the period of World War I.

Her recollections include school life, fearful gossip about the end of the world, food deprivations (women eating snails), German prisoners working on local farms and after the war, Sunday School treats in Lydiard Park when the young Lord Bolingbroke rowed children on the lake.
