A news cutting entitled Lydiard Park, an example to Britain. After years of restoration works, Lydiard House opened to the public on May 14th 1955. The ceremony was attended by local dignitaries and presided over by The Mayor of Swindon. Tea was held in the grounds.
On the 16th May, the Swindon Evening Advertiser records part of a speech by The Marquis of Landsdown who had loaned paintings and furnishings for display in the State Rooms whilst his own home, Bowood House, was undergoing renovations.
"It was significant that everybody concerned with the house from the caretaker to the Mayor of Swindon, was already very attached to it. "You", he added " have got to clothe this house with affection. You have got to have the love to keep it alive".
An article entitled 'Saved from Destruction' in The National Trust Magazine (Autumn 2024) records that in 1955 approximately one historic house was being lost every five days and that researchers have suggested that at least 1,200 were demolished in England alone between 1900 and 1970.
