Passport issued to Henry St.John, 5th Viscount Bolingbroke (1820-1899) by the Foreign Office on 27th July 1852. In it Henry is described as ' Viscount Bolingbroke (British Subject) a Peer of England, - travelling on the Continent with a man servant'.

That same year, a new arrival on the continent, Henry met Ellen Medex with whom he began a long affair, the couple masquerading as man and wife.

The licence is awarded by the Earl of Malmesbury, Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and is signed by both Malmesbury and Bolingbroke. It is contained in a black leather wallet with gold tooling.
