Photograph of Mr and Mrs Gough and German POW's, Lydiard Park
Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
This photograph was taken on the steps of Lydiard House, probably just after the end of World War II, when a German hospital POW Camp occupied a large part of the Lydiard estate.
Harry Gough, Caretaker of Lydiard House (or 'mansion' as it was referred to then), can just be seen at the back of the group, wearing a cap. His wife, Mrs Gough, is standing next to one of the camp nurses. The gentleman in spectacles on the far left is a Prisoner of War, possibly a doctor as he is in civilian clothes.
The photograph is one of twenty pictures by Swindon photographer Albert Beaney which show the camp and other wartime activities at Lydiard Park.
