Brian Carne, Vicar of St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze and St. Mary's Lydiard Millicent from 1960-1968, seen here with Mrs Large at a parish event, probably the annual fete and gymkhana (The Lydiard Tregoz Country Show). Mrs Large was a prominent member of the village community and was one of the organisers of the show.
Its said she purchased Lord Bolingbroke's car when he left Lydiard Park and she would pile children into the back to take them to St. Mary's Church and local events.
Obituary for Mrs Large 1980
Mrs Large was a founder member of The Friends of Lydiard Tregoz and it was she who insisted that the 'e' be omitted from the spelling of Tregoze. Report 13 contains a note of appreciation about her written by Mrs Gertrude Gough for the April edition of The Lydiards:
'When asked to write an article on the late Mrs Large I was faced with an impossible task. I knew her for forty-five years and our mutual activities have centred on Lydiard Tregoze Church. I can‟t name all the different organisations in which she was interested, the list would be too long. The Girls‟ Society, Brownies, Youth Club, Poppy Day, C.M.S., the Sunday School at Hook, the Mothers Union and the Sunday three-o-clock service in the school, as well as such annual activities as the Harvest Supper. This is to name but a few. If anything concerned raising funds she was there, and she always managed to get what she wanted. I am sure that everyone who worked with her will bear me out that she was a hard task-master, and even if we resented it sometimes, it ended in perfection . She was still driving her car at the age of eighty, and travelling with her was an exciting experience. I always held by breath until we arrived at our destination, although to my knowledge she never had an accident. So much could be said about her. This remarkable woman whom we all loved and respected is at rest now, although I am sure that wherever she is she is doing a bit of organising! God bless her, and I think the following words are most appropriate, Well done, good and faithful servant.'
