A photograph showing marquees and guests on the main lawn in front of Lydiard House,
The occasion was thought to be a party to mark the coming of age of Vernon Henry St.John on March 15th 1917. Although we know from newspaper reports that his birthday was a fine Spring day, trees appear to be in leaf in this photograph, suggesting the event may have taken place later in the year.
It is most likely the photograph actually records the celebrations held on July 1st 1911 to mark the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary. Local farmer Elliot Woolford describes the event in his diary, saying that the event attracted around 400 people. He describes there being two large tents erected on the lawn where people had tea, followed by sports and later dancing to the Lydiard Millicent Band. Lady Bolingbroke apparently took an active part in the event, handing out prizes and everybody enjoying themselves.
