The common or grey partridge, Perdix perdix.

This is another delightful excerpt from Lord Bolingbroke's Nature Notes. Tradition has it that the common partridge began it's wooing on St Valentine's Day, a myth soon laid to rest by the fact that its call could be heard well before 14 February. Love and tragedy often go hand in hand, as is so clearly shown in the description of the birds life.
