Recollections of Lydiard Park during & after World War II by Gertrude Gough
Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
Notes about Lydiard Park during and after World War II, compiled by Mrs Gertrude (Gertie) Gough and assisted by Mr Sidney Bowler.
Both lived on "the camp" at Lydiard Park, the former military hospital that was converted into temporary homes for local people after World War II. The mini estate was occupied throughout the 1950's and was finally demolished in 1960.
Gertie recalls 'Life was |"come day, go day", and we spent much time sitting on our coal bukers chatting to our neigbours. Occasionally there was a fight which livened things up, but we all enjoyed our lives there'.
And from earlier times she remembers the German Prisoners of War including an escape when one German was recaptured at Moredon Station in Swindon and another managed to get away.
