A copy of a reference provided to Dr Werner Wachsmuth, the senior German doctor at 160 Prisoner of War Military Hospital at Lydiard Park by the camp's commander, Colonel Sutton, 26th April 1946.

Dr Wachsmuth was held in high regard by Colonel Sutton as his reference attests.

' As German Commandant and Camp Leader, he has held together the whole German Medical Staff - maintained their morale under difficult and trying conditions and represented their complaints and grievances in a most fair and considerate manner'.

There is also personal warmth in his final words: 'I wish him the very best of good fortune and good health in his new appointment and shall hope to see him again under happier conditions'.

To find out more about Dr Wachsmuth' s personal bravery and commitment to his patients, see Items of Interest below.
