Roland was the youngest of three brothers from Washpool, Lydiard Millicent who fought in World War II. Roland joined the Caledonian regiment of which he was immensely proud all his life.
Roland married Gertrude Garrett of Shaw at St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze in 1942. Gertrude (Gertie) was the organist at St. Mary's and a newspaper cutting in the family album describes the ceremony, conducted by Revd. Willetts. The article record the hymns that were sung, the outfits of the bride and her four bridesmaids, the couple's wedding presents and that their honeymoon was to be in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Despite shortages imposed by the war, Gertie and her bridesmaids were handsomely dressed. The bride wore, 'an ankle- length gown of net over taffeta, trimmed in place with silver sequins. Her veil was held in place by a coronet..... She wore silver shoes and carried a shower bouquet of red carnations'.
After the war the couple with their small son Geoff, moved to no.90 Lydiard Park.
