The cover of this booklet declares that the sermon contained within it was published on request - presumably it had a rousing effect on the congregation and it was felt it should be more widely circulated. In its climax Revd. Ebenezer Humphrey Jones calls on the congregation to be compassionate, pleading for 'the widows and orphans of the brave men who have perished on the battlefield while fighting for their Queen and country and for the rights and tranquillity of mankind'. He exhorts them ' Oh let your contributions be large and liberal equal to the occasion'.
At the time Reverend Ebenezer Humphrey Jones, held a living in Pembrokeshire but the following year, in 1900, he and his family moved to take up a new living at St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze.
The booklet was amongst the effects of Vernon St.John 6th Viscount Bolingbroke. It almost certainly belonged to his mother, Lady Mary Bolingbroke, who assumed the rights of appointing the rector, following the death of her husband in 1899.
