Extracts from the Lydiard Kitchen Recipe Book, 1704 -1890
Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
Part of a wider research article by Deputy the Hon. John Tooke Kirby. The recipes were copied by him in 1937 from a Lydiard Park kitchen book begun in Elizabethan times.
Tooke Kirby kept his horses stabled at Lydiard and had access to the Library where he records that several old recipe books were on the shelves, the bulk of the collection having already been dispersed by sale.
Recipes include Ham in Hades(1850), Boiled Oysters (1704), Alderman's Walk (1710) and Grandfather's Bloater (1890), a favourite of Lord Bolingbroke which was cooked for him over the fire in the Library.
