Pastel portrait of George Richard as an infant by his mother Lady Diana (Spencer) St.John. George was to become the 3rd Viscount Bolingbroke. His mother, Lady Diana, married Topham Beauclerk after George's father divorced her, and became a well known society artist.
The portrait was left to Henry 4th Viscount Bolingbroke by his step-mother, Isabella 3rd Viscountess Bolingbroke. Her will records:
'To the present Lord Harry, Viscount Bolingbroke, the portrait of his late father my husband, painted by his mother Lady Diana when a child to be preserved and kept, for and to descend as an heir loom, and hung up in the drawing room at Lydiard as before.'
It would appear that at some point the portrait was moved from the Drawing Room, possibly before the family left Lydiard Park in 1943. It can be seen in the Dressing Room alongside other works by Lady Diana Spencer.
