One of four photographs taken by John Piper of Lydiard Tregoze which are held in The Tate Archive.

Piper was an English painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows and both opera and theatre sets. His work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches and monuments. Unsurprisingly, he had a particular love for St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze and like many of his generation he was touched by the romance of the St.John family's ancestral home.

John Betjeman shared Piper's enthusiasm for the mansion and church, featuring both in the first Shell Guides to Wiltshire on which he and Piper collaborated and to which Lord Bolingbroke contributed Nature Notes.
