A newspaper article which mentions the sale at Christies of a painting of 'Gimcrack' by George Stubbs for 4,200 Guineas on December 10th 1943. Vernon St.John, 6th Viscount Bolingbroke, is quoted as saying it had been in his 'family possession since 1850 and possibly earlier'. In fact the family had owned it since the 18th Century.
