Plan of Ministry of Works Standard Hut c1950
Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
The plan shows construction details for assembling a Ministry of Works Standard Hut 24ft Span. (Foundation Plan and Details Scale 1/4" to 1"). It forms part of a collection of material concerning the building of Hook Village Hall, Lydiard Tregoze.
The concrete framed Ministry of Works huts were a cost effective solution to many post-war building projects. The Committee of the Hook Village Hall Fund had already built the vestibule and cloakrooms of the building we know today in anticipation of erecting a 'permanent hall' but in 1950 the National Council of Social Service rejected that proposal and instead offered their Standard Hut for an annual rental of £13.
The Hook committee accepted a tender of £1,168.17s.7d from Mr F. Perry of Cricklade to build the hut but Mr Perry proved a slow contractor and was eventually dismissed. In January 1952 Smith & Hope were brought in to complete the building which was officially opened later that year on August 12th.
