In this church on 1st August 1804, George Richard St.John, 3rd Viscount Bolingbroke married his mistress, Isabella Charlotte Antoinette Sophia Baronin von Hompesch (c1772-1848). The marriage was prompted by the death of the viscount's estranged wife, Charlotte Collins.

In 1804 the Manhattan church was in its second phase of construction (1790-1839) and was notable as President Washington and members of his government had worshiped there. The church you see on the site today is a third reconstruction dating from 1839.
