An affectionate and chatty letter from Charles St.John to his mother, Lady Bolingbroke, sent from his WWI army training camp in Wearde, Saltash, Cornwall.

The letter references his elder brother Henry's return to England which followed a severe injury sustained at Gallipoli and his surprise at the arrival of his Lydiard neighbours, Andrews and Stanley Painter, who had recently joined up.

No doubt in an effort to cheer up his anxious mother he describes how he has missed the days 20 mile route march in the pouring rain and begs a few spare partridges as the food is 'rotten'.
