Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
Watercolour of Charles Orby Wombwell made in 1836 and showing him as a young man in the uniform of The 10th Hussars, a cavalry regiment in which he held the rank of cornet.
The 1841 Census shows that Charles and his wife, Charlotte (m. May 1836) were resident at Lydiard Park where his father- in-law, Thomas Orby Hunter, was Lord Bolingbroke's tenant. Charles took over the tenancy of Lydiard Park in 1848, following the death of his father-in -law the previous year. (See: The Decline and Fall of the St.Johns of Lydiard Tregoze by Rev. Brian G. Carne - Report no 34).
Charles was the son of Sir George Wombwell, 2nd Baronet. Like his father, he was a first class cricketer, playing for the Marylebone Cricket Club against the West of England in 1845 and for the Surrey Club against the MCC at The Oval in 1848. He was listed as a member of nearby Purton Cricket Club in 1864 though at that point he was no longer resident at Lydiard Park.
