Lady Johanna and Sir Walter St. John divided their time between their Battersea home, more convenient for Sir Walter when Parliament was sitting, and their country estate at Lydiard Park.
The St.John papers contain numerous letters written by Lady Johanna to Thomas Hardyman, her steward at Lydiard in which she orders produce for her Battersea home where the couple entertained Charles II, and issues instructions concerning the upkeep of the estate.
The couple made frequent visits to Lydiard House where Sir Walter entertained his political and influential friends.
It is likely several of their thirteen children were born at Lydiard where their baptisms took place at St. Mary’s Church. Lady Johanna frequently sent her children to Lydiard House to recuperate from illness, checking up on them in letters to Hardyman.
