A 1926 national newspaper report on Vernon St.John's claim to the Bolingbroke peerage being accepted. It includes details of the confusion and mistrust caused by Vernon's father, Henry 5th Viscount Bolingbroke, who died in 1899.

Vernon was forced to bring his title claim to the peerage rather than automatically inheriting the titles when he came of age in March 1917. However false claims made by the old Viscount about his marital status and the legitimacy of his two eldest sons, Henry and Charles St.John, had caused doubts within the establishment.

Finally, Vernon St.John assumed his rightful titles of Viscount Bolingbroke and St.John, Baron St.John of Lydiard Tregoze and Baron St.John of Battersea. Lady Bolingbroke herself gave evidence to the enquiry and the publicity surrounding the case was distressful for all the family.
