George Bailey (1815-1900) was a significant figure in Swindon's history. Prior to becoming Rector of Lydiard Tregoze in 1885 he spent thirty eight years ministering in Old Town, Swindon. Here he oversaw the building of Christ Church in 1851 to a design by Sir Gilbert Scott.

Brian Carne's comprehensive article provides a fascinating insight into this forthright and practical man and covers the controversy surrounding the formation of a new Parish Council of lay members in 1894 and the administration of Hook Street Cemetery following the closure of the churchyard.
