Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
The earliest photographic image of St. Mary's Lydiard Tregoze known to exist. It was captured by Nevil Story-Maskelyne who lived nearby Lydiard Park in Basset Down House, Wiltshire.
The image is a salted paper print from a calotype negative and shows the south side of the church from the park. It is mounted on the same page as an image of Basset Down House.
Nevil Story Maskelyne was an early pioneer of photography and friend of Fox Talbot who invented the salted paper and calotype processes, precursors to the photographic processes of the later 19th and 20th centuries.
