In December 1876 a story appeared in The New-York World, about Liberty Hall in New Jersey and its purchase by George Richard, Lord Bolingbroke. It recounted the story of his bigamous marriage to Isabella. In January Julia Lawrence of Washington felt compelled to write to the New-York Times, correcting the article. Isabella had been her dear friend and she wished to show how an innocent young girl had been duped by an older, more sophisticated man. She ended her letter by saying that a 'purer or better woman never lived'.
